On Monday, February 23rd, approximately thirty political prisoners were released from the Rodeo 1 prison near Caracas, Venezuela, following the enactment of an amnesty law on Thursday. The NGO Foro Penal, which advocates for political prisoners, reported that a total of 65 individuals had been freed over the preceding three days under this law, which was passed under American pressure after President Nicolas Maduro's capture on January 3rd. Despite the releases, human rights defenders have criticized the law as insufficient, noting it excludes cases related to the military, which are common among the approximately 200 inmates at Rodeo 1 who had been on a hunger strike over the weekend.
