Venezuela approaches ICJ over Essequibo dispute with Guyana 05.05.2026

On May 5, a Venezuelan delegation led by Delcy Rodríguez participated in hearings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) convened by Guyana as part of the territorial dispute over Essequibo. Foreign Minister Yván Gil stated that Venezuela will defend its historical rights over Guayana Esequiba in this forum and any other necessary, reiterating that the process initiated by Guyana is invalid because it contradicts the Geneva Agreement, the only valid legal framework according to Caracas. Gil criticized Guyana's arguments as false and manipulated, and asserted that they do not recognize the ICJ's jurisdiction. For his part, Guyana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugh Hilton Todd, maintained that Venezuela lacks legitimate grounds and that its aspirations threaten peace and security. The hearings, which extend for several days, could result in a ruling within months, with binding decisions subject to the UN Security Council.
