Verbraucherschutzchefin warnt vor TikTok und ungesunder Ernährung: „Brauchen Zuckersteuer“ 19.02.2026

Ramona Pop, Germany's top consumer protection official, is advocating for stricter regulations on social media platforms and a new approach to sugar consumption, particularly concerning children. She argues that addictive algorithms and design features on platforms like TikTok and Instagram create dangerous "bubbles" and pose risks beyond simple age limits, calling for platform redesign and mandatory privacy settings for young users. Pop also highlights the issue of excessive sugar in food, citing the UK's sugar tax as a successful model to reduce sugar content in beverages and proposing a similar tax for Germany. Additionally, she suggests making healthy foods more affordable by potentially abolishing VAT on them, emphasizing that healthy eating is increasingly dictated by availability and price rather than individual choice.
