Vienna mother (39) has been waiting months for maternity allowance – instead, an enforcement officer arrived! 07.07.2026

A 39-year-old self-employed woman from Vienna is experiencing a massive bureaucratic nightmare with the Social Insurance for the Self-Employed (SVS) following the birth of her daughter on April 17. Despite having submitted her application for maternity allowance (Wochengeld) through various channels as early as March, the payment has failed to arrive to date. The problem lies in a missing form for the so-called 'suspension of activity' (Ruhendmeldung) regarding her self-employment, which the SVS did not explicitly request. As a result, the insurance company demanded contributions for two quarters as if the mother were still working full-time, and even sent an enforcement officer to her home. The suspension of activity was only accepted as of June 1, resulting in high back payments for the mother, while her own maternity allowance remains listed as 'in process.' The affected woman is now turning to the public to draw attention to this bureaucratic error and the resulting financial burden.
