‘Violence is not activism’: NatJoints talks tough on anti-foreigner mobs after xenophobic unrest 03.06.2026

South Africa's National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) has issued a strong condemnation of anti-foreigner mobs, asserting that violence is not a legitimate form of activism and that no group has the right to enforce immigration laws outside constitutional frameworks. This declaration follows recent xenophobic unrest in Mossel Bay, Western Cape, where three individuals were killed, dozens of homes were destroyed, and hundreds were displaced. The Mozambican government is planning to repatriate 1,000 citizens in response to the violence. NatJoints officials emphasized that law enforcement agencies are solely responsible for maintaining order and enforcing laws, and that arrests are being made for offenses related to public violence. They also highlighted an operational plan to enhance security and combat incitement to violence, warning that freedom of expression does not protect those who incite hatred or harm. Experts suggest that holding perpetrators accountable and shifting the government's narrative away from linking migrants to societal problems are crucial steps to address the recurring xenophobic violence.
