Von der Leyen’s gendered ‘pinkwashing’: Ukrainian women matter more than Palestinian women 19.04.2026

An academic analysis of over 50 speeches by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reveals a stark contrast in her portrayal of Ukrainian and Palestinian women, suggesting a gendered and racialized logic influencing EU foreign policy. While von der Leyen frequently celebrates Ukrainian women as "unseen heroes" and leaders, Palestinian women are largely ignored, their political agency denied, and the Palestinian people are primarily reduced to "Hamas terrorists." This article highlights how von der Leyen's rhetoric aligns with Israel's "pinkwashing" strategies, notably by citing Golda Meir as a feminist icon while ignoring Meir's own dehumanization of Palestinians. The analysis argues that this differential treatment is rooted in a colonial conception of Europe that situates Israel as an ally while dehumanizing Palestinians, contradicting EU principles of equality and international law and perpetuating a hierarchy of protected versus unprotected communities.
