Waiting Room on Wheels: Domestic Economy Suffocating at Borders 08.06.2026

Bosnia and Herzegovina is facing significant logistical problems due to overloaded border crossings, particularly Gradiška and Bijača, which are crucial for trade with the EU. Last year, over 9.4 billion KM worth of goods passed through the Gradiška border crossing, while Bijača recorded a turnover of 3 billion KM. Delays and standstills at these crossings cause significant financial losses, spoilage of goods, and loss of customer trust, with costs of 40 euros per hour for every standstill of a freight vehicle. An additional problem is the fixed charging system at customs terminals, where a full 40 KM is charged for parking even if the vehicle is only stopped for an hour. The solution lies in establishing five new functional BIP (Bosnia and Herzegovina – European Union) crossings, and digitizing procedures, along with signing intergovernmental agreements on border crossings, which the prime ministers of BiH and Croatia recently did.
