The Swedish island of Gotland, strategically located in the Baltic Sea just 300 kilometers from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, has become a flashpoint for tensions between NATO and Russia. Facing a growing threat of hybrid aggression and a possible Russian occupation that could block supplies to the Baltic states and Finland, the island has been actively remilitarizing since 2015. Following Sweden's accession to NATO in 2024, investments of over 200 million euros have been made to strengthen its infrastructure and defenses, notably with the reintegration of an armed regiment and the addition of several thousand soldiers, also involving the local population in its defense.
