In May 2026, for the second consecutive month, Ukraine managed to liberate more territory than Russia conquered, marking a setback for Vladimir Putin whose army is struggling to advance on the front. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia seized approximately 40 km² while losing about 280 km², reversing the trend observed since October 2023. This loss of Russian territory is accompanied by Ukrainian drone attacks, notably in Saint Petersburg, and some Russian officials privately acknowledge a stalemate. Despite this, Putin has reaffirmed his commitment to achieving his initial war objectives.
