Water partially restored to Ratanda after deadly protests - Lesufi 05.07.2026

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced that water supply has been partially restored to Ratanda following violent service delivery protests triggered by prolonged water and electricity shortages. While low-lying areas are receiving water, residents in higher-lying areas must wait a few more days as reservoir levels, currently at 10%, are expected to reach 40% by Monday to facilitate pumping. The unrest, which erupted last Wednesday, resulted in two deaths and the arson of Lesedi Local Municipality Executive Mayor Mluleki Nkosi's home. In response to the violence, Gauteng police arrested 15 suspects for public violence, though investigations into the arson attack are ongoing. To assist those in high-lying areas, Mayor Nkosi has instructed the deployment of water tankers, which will be escorted by police to ensure safe delivery to the community.
