"We all get together every Friday wearing uniforms": the account of the fake police officer after being released 05.07.2026

Dentist Matías Letelier, formally charged with impersonating a Carabineros officer to direct traffic on Avenida del Mar in La Serena, has been released after posting $2 million pesos in bail. Upon leaving the court, Letelier offered his version of events, claiming he wore clothing similar to the institutional uniform due to social gatherings he holds every Friday with police officers. The defendant, who claims to have provided free dental services to officers for 15 years, admitted to overstepping his bounds and apologized to the institution. Although pretrial detention was initially ordered due to flight risk, the La Serena Guarantee Court accepted the substitute measure. The subject remains subject to weekly check-ins, national travel restrictions, and an investigation that will last 120 days, while the Government described the incident as a very serious matter.
