'We Are at a Critical Point in the Fight Against Malaria' #WorldMalariaDay 25.04.2026

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is spearheading the fastest malaria vaccine rollout in its history across 25 African nations, marking a critical juncture in combating a leading cause of death, particularly among children under five who represent over 75% of global malaria fatalities. Early data from countries like Kenya, Malawi, Ghana, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso indicate significant reductions in severe illness, hospital admissions, and child deaths when vaccines are integrated with established interventions such as bed nets and chemoprevention. Despite challenges in delivering the four-dose regimen, countries are employing phased, tailored strategies, supported by Gavi's $5 million learning agenda to optimize delivery methods. Climate change is exacerbating malaria transmission unpredictability, increasing the urgency for sustained prevention and vaccine protection. Gavi aims to fully protect 50 million more children and save 180,000 lives within five years, emphasizing the need for continued funding and R&D for next-generation vaccines to maintain and build upon these crucial gains.
