'We will not give up': 30,000 pack Vilnius square in defence of public broadcaster 25.04.2026

Approximately 30,000 individuals convened in Vilnius's Cathedral Square on Saturday, protesting proposed legislative changes to Lithuania's public broadcaster, LRT, a move they believe jeopardizes free speech. Demonstrators directed their criticism towards the ruling Social Democrats and President Gitanas Nausėda, accusing them of disregarding public opposition. The "Hands Off Free Speech" movement, now in its sixth protest, voiced concerns that the amendments, spearheaded by Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, would politicize LRT by establishing a supervisory board, altering dismissal procedures for the director general, and restricting external journalist participation. Critics argue these changes would compromise editorial independence, a sentiment echoed by participants who displayed placards and flags symbolizing Lithuanian freedom.
