Weekly Commentary: New Climate Reality Forces Us to Rethink 03.07.2026

Switzerland is experiencing a new climate reality, characterized by warming of almost three degrees since pre-industrial times and recurring heatwaves. This is leading to growing concern among the population, as teachers, construction workers, seniors, and farmers directly feel the impact. Despite significant investments in climate policy, too little has been invested in preparing for this foreseeable reality, particularly in urban areas with sealed surfaces. Weather expert Jörg Kachelmann criticizes the Federal Office of Public Health and laments the lack of serious warning systems as well as deaths in nursing homes and hospitals due to heat, as air conditioning is demonized. The increased demand for air conditioning symbolizes an adaptation to climate change, which is now also reaching conservative circles such as farmers, demanding a political realignment toward pragmatism, more green spaces, and adaptation measures.
