Wegen Verhängung des Kriegsrechts Lebenslange Haft für Südkoreas Ex-Präsident Yoon 19.02.2026

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Seoul Central District Court for leading an insurrection and undermining the constitution by declaring martial law. The 65-year-old was found guilty of orchestrating the declaration of martial law in December 2024, which he justified by labeling parliamentarians as criminals and "anti-state forces." Although the military surrounded the parliament building, enough lawmakers convened to reject the decree, leading to its swift revocation. This conviction follows a significant trial, with other former government officials also receiving prison sentences, including ex-Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun (30 years), intelligence officer Roh Sang-won (18 years), and police chief Cho Ji-ho (12 years). Yoon, who was impeached by parliament and officially removed from office by the Constitutional Court in April 2025, has been in custody since July and previously received a five-year sentence in January for resisting arrest and document forgery. Appeals are possible against these verdicts.
