West Bengal Polls: In Murshidabad's Beldanga, gamochas weave livelihoods amid election noise 12.04.2026

Beldanga, a constituency in Murshidabad, West Bengal, renowned for its handwoven 'gamochhas', is currently overshadowed by religious polarization rather than development issues, a shift attributed to the 2019 protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Local residents, like Mofizur Rehman, lament the focus on religious divides over progress, noting that while the BJP might benefit from Hindu vote consolidation, Muslim votes could be split among multiple candidates including the Congress, CPI(M)-AISF, and Humayun Kabir's outfit. The Trinamool Congress has fielded Rabiyul Alam Chowdhury, the BJP has nominated Bharat Jhawar, and the Congress has put forward Saharuddin Sheikh. Despite external perceptions of violence, locals emphasize communal harmony, with women actively engaged in 'gamochha' weaving, a skill that sustains livelihoods. Election officials are implementing measures to ensure peaceful polling.
