What is hantavirus? Symptoms you need to know after deadly cruise ship outbreak 07.05.2026

A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three fatalities and seven illnesses among its passengers. Investigations, including genetic sequencing, are underway to understand the virus's spread, with five confirmed cases. Hantaviruses, primarily transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, can cause severe conditions like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) or hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Symptoms can initially mimic the flu but progress to life-threatening respiratory distress or kidney failure. While human-to-human transmission is rare, the Andean strain has shown some evidence of this. Public health efforts focus on containment, including contact tracing and isolation, with passengers potentially needing to isolate for up to 45 days.
