A new form of romance scam, dubbed the 'Dubai Prince scam,' is using the image of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al-Maktoum, the Crown Prince, to deceive victims on social media and messaging applications. Scammers employ deepfakes—hyper-realistic videos generated by AI—to impersonate him and establish a relationship of trust. One victim, Maria, lost the equivalent of a year's savings, totaling $1,625, for fake certificates and a fraudulent royal membership card. These frauds are often linked to Nigerian criminal networks, exploiting the prince's popularity, which is followed by more than 17 million followers on Instagram. The traceability of payments is made difficult by the use of third-party countries and cryptocurrencies.
