Astronomers have long puzzled over the existence of massive, quiescent galaxies in the early universe, which appear to have stopped forming stars just 1-2 billion years after the Big Bang. A new study led by Rebecca Davies from Swinburne University offers a compelling explanation: a galaxy-quenching "wind" driven by supernova explosions during galaxy collisions. Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the team observed a galaxy called CRISTAL-02, which existed one billion years after the Big Bang. This galaxy was experiencing a rapid growth spurt, forming stars twice as fast as similar galaxies at the same cosmic epoch.
