When the Boss (almost) met the King: the night Bruce Springsteen raided Graceland 29.04.2026

On April 29, 1976, 26-year-old Bruce Springsteen, fresh off a show in Memphis during his ‘Born to Run’ tour, decided to visit Graceland with fellow E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt to meet his idol, Elvis Presley. After being warned about dogs and advised not to climb the wall, Springsteen still entered the grounds and approached the front door. He was informed that Elvis was in Lake Tahoe, and despite mentioning his recent Time and Newsweek covers, a guard escorted him out. Springsteen later wrote a song called "Fire," inspired by seeing Elvis perform gospel songs, which was famously covered by The Pointer Sisters, reaching No. 2 in 1979, years after Elvis's death in 1977.
