‘White shirt guy’ claims he was assaulted by police at the Sydney rally against Isaac Herzog. Now he plans to sue 05.05.2026

Derek Jones, a 56-year-old finance professional, is initiating legal action in the New South Wales Supreme Court following an alleged unprovoked assault by police during a 9 February protest against Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Sydney. Viral footage captured officers repeatedly punching Jones, who sustained two broken ribs and a bruised lung during the incident. Represented by Mark Davis of XD Law, Jones seeks a personal injury claim and a judicial review to uncover police orders and pursue potential criminal prosecutions against the officers involved. While Premier Chris Minns urged caution regarding social media clips, Jones maintains his innocence, asserting he was merely observing the rally. This case follows a court ruling that previously restricted protest laws were unconstitutional, prompting a review of related charges.
