Why A-Level results expose basic mathematics dilemma 07.07.2026

The 2026 Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) results announced by Necta Executive Secretary Prof Said Mohamed reveal a high national success rate, with 99.92 percent of 125,056 candidates passing. While Social Sciences, Business, and Language combinations showed exceptional performance, a significant disparity exists in mathematics proficiency. Specifically, Basic Applied Mathematics recorded a notably lower pass rate of 80.53 percent, with over 72 percent of those students receiving grades between C and S. This contrasts sharply with Advanced Mathematics, where 98.2 percent passed. Experts suggest this gap indicates foundational numeracy weaknesses rather than advanced content difficulty. Additionally, Necta addressed examination integrity by cancelling results for 58 candidates due to malpractice and withholding results for 190 others. The council also suspended Excellency Open School in Manyara following administrative violations, emphasizing the ongoing need for curriculum and teaching improvements.
