Why are so many Democrats going quiet on climate change? 08.06.2026

Despite the ongoing climate crisis, many Democratic politicians have significantly reduced their public discourse on the issue, a trend dubbed "climate hushing." Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is a notable exception, continuing to advocate for climate action. This shift is partly attributed to a post-2024 election analysis suggesting that focusing on social justice and environmental concerns may alienate voters concerned with economic issues like the rising cost of living. However, experts like Matto Mildenberger and Matt Burgess argue there is no concrete evidence that discussing climate change harms Democratic candidates; studies even suggest a modest electoral benefit. Instead, a perceived political liability, influenced by polling that ranks climate change low among voter priorities and a desire for "message discipline" in a fragmented media landscape, is leading Democrats to downplay the topic, potentially hindering momentum for necessary climate action.
