Why do Latinos work for ICE? 06.08.2026

The Guardian

Since Trump's return to power, over 60 people have died in ICE custody, including two Latino immigrants. While many Latinos feel targeted by anti-immigrant operations, a significant number of those enforcing these policies are themselves Latino. Latinos now make up a majority of Border Patrol officers and 20-30% of ICE agents. This trend has deep historical roots, dating back to the 1950s when Latino leaders supported deportation campaigns like Operation Wetback, driven by fears of labor competition. The United Farm Workers union also treated undocumented workers as threats, sometimes reporting them to authorities. However, attitudes shifted during the civil rights era, with many Mexican Americans rejecting assimilationist impulses. Yet nativist undercurrents persisted, as seen in Latino ambivalence toward California's Proposition 187 in 1994. In recent years, "Latinos for Trump" factions contributed to his rise, and he expanded Latino support in 2024, especially among men and in border regions. The American right has increasingly included figures of color, from Thomas Sowell to Enrique Tarrio, offering inclusion on specific terms. This evolution helps explain why some Latinos find these movements appealing, seeing themselves as defenders of order and tradition rather than victims. The lesson is not that Latinos are uniquely reactionary, but that their support for anti-immigration politics is part of a long history that must be acknowledged.
