Wie lange sollten Mütter ihr Baby stillen? Neue Empfehlung von Experten 23.02.2026

Germany has reverted to the World Health Organization's (WHO) established recommendation for breastfeeding duration, ending a 15-year deviation. The new S3 guideline advises exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a full-term infant's life, with the introduction of complementary foods starting in the seventh month while continuing breastfeeding. The total breastfeeding period should be at least twelve months. This change, supported by the German Midwives Association (DHV), emphasizes the significant health benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers, including enhanced immunity, reduced allergy risks, and long-term maternal health advantages. Experts stress that while the guideline provides a framework, individual circumstances should guide recommendations.
