Wie wählt Bayern? „Briefwahl besonders populär“ – Spitzenreiter in Deutschland 24.02.2026

Bavaria is experiencing a significant surge in postal voting applications ahead of its municipal elections on March 8, positioning the state as a leader in Germany for this method. Cities like Munich, Aschaffenburg, Kempten, Fürth, Ingolstadt, Nürnberg, and Augsburg report higher numbers of requests for postal ballot documents than in previous elections. Approximately 10.1 million citizens are eligible to vote. The popularity of postal voting is attributed to the convenience of reviewing extensive ballots at home, its widespread adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a general increase in political participation. Historical data shows a rising trend, with "Wahlscheinwähler" (including postal voters) at 60% in 2020, up from 29% in 2008. Political scientist Lars Rensmann notes that older people and those with professional mobility also contribute to this trend. Postal ballots, sent since February 16, must be submitted by 6 PM on election day.
