Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine four years ago, a covert battle has been waged on Wikipedia, with pro-Russian actors attempting to manipulate content to align with the Kremlin's narrative. This strategic communication war targets the globally accessed encyclopedia, with attempts ranging from labeling the Ukrainian president a "dictator" on French pages to extensive factual rewrites on Russian-language articles and the inversion of Estonian national history. A dedicated pro-Kremlin clone encyclopedia, Ruwiki, was even created in spring 2023, copying over a million articles from Russian Wikipedia and subsequently altering content to favor the Kremlin's perspective, including renaming the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of Ukraine. These manipulations extend to English-language pages, where Estonian history has been distorted, and even to francophone pages, albeit with less coordination. The challenge is amplified by the potential for AI models trained on Wikipedia to propagate misinformation.
