Will a new chief make a difference? Indonesia’s free meals scheme faces biggest test yet 04.06.2026

Indonesia's flagship free meals programme, valued at US$15 billion, is undergoing its most significant challenge following the dismissal and arrest of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) chief, Dadan Hindayana, and two former deputies on June 2 and 3, 2026, respectively. The scheme, launched in January 2025, has been marred by food poisoning incidents. These arrests are linked to allegations of corruption and procurement irregularities, highlighting critical governance weaknesses, insufficient oversight, and poor quality controls that experts believe extend beyond individual leadership. The new chief, Nanik Sudaryati, faces the immense task of rebuilding public trust in a programme essential for reducing child stunting but currently plagued by systemic risks.
