After months of controversy and postponement, the issue of the deputies to the Prime Minister and the President has returned to the forefront of the political scene in Iraq, amid clear divisions among political forces regarding the mechanism for their selection. Amer Al-Faiz, a leader in the Coordination Framework, confirmed on Friday, July 3, 2026, that there is a political divide over finalizing these two positions. Al-Faiz told 'Baghdad Today' that there are two conflicting views: the first holds that the deputies to the Prime Minister should hold ministerial portfolios, while the second view, represented by the former Prime Minister and head of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, argues that combining the deputy role with a ministerial portfolio hinders work, and therefore deputies should not hold ministerial portfolios.
