Wilmer Cruz, the “Mole of La Guaira,” released under precautionary measures #4Jul 04.07.2026

Volunteer rescuer Wilmer Antonio Cruz, known as the “Mole of La Guaira,” was released on Friday, July 3, under precautionary measures involving freedom with a reporting requirement. After being missing for nearly 48 hours while performing rescue operations following the recent earthquakes on the central coast, his whereabouts were reported by organizations such as Provea, Un Mundo Sin Mordaza, and Clippve as a suspected case of enforced disappearance. Massive social media pressure, driven by activists and journalists, was decisive in his release. Cruz, a resident of Caraballeda, went viral for his heroic work in collapsed structures, where he helped extract approximately 60 people. The volunteer used his platforms to denounce the lack of heavy machinery and the scarce presence of official agencies during the emergency.
