Wind power prices up in new offshore contracts as UK moves away from gas 14.01.2026

Britain has secured 8.4 gigawatts (GW) of new offshore wind power through a record auction, aiming to reduce reliance on volatile natural gas and meet its 2030 clean power targets. This significant award, enough to power 12 million homes, comes with a strike price of £90.91 per megawatt hour (MWh), an 11% increase from the previous year, sparking political debate over rising renewable energy costs. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband hailed the results as a move towards energy sovereignty and a monumental step towards clean power by 2030, stating the secured price is 40% lower than building a new gas plant. The government anticipates £22 billion in private investment and 7,000 jobs from these contracts, which have been extended to 20 years to enhance bidder attractiveness.
