Witness Says Former NHIA Boss, Usman Yusuf Awarded Contract To Brother’s Firm Without Due Procurement Process 12h ago

A prosecution witness, James Balami, testified at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja that a vehicle supply contract awarded to Lubekh Nigeria Ltd, allegedly owned by Prof Usman Yusuf's brother, Kabiru Yusuf Yar’adua, bypassed the National Health Insurance Authority's (NHIA) procurement procedures. Balami, the Director of Procurement at NHIA, stated that the contract originated from the Human Resources Department directly to the CEO, Prof Yusuf, without involving the Procurement Department. He also revealed that a nephew of Prof Yusuf participated in the evaluation process for this contract, which was reportedly valued around N9 million. Balami further testified that several petitions alleging maladministration and procurement breaches were filed against Prof Yusuf during his tenure, leading to the formation of ministerial and presidential investigative panels. The court adjourned the hearing to October 14 and 15, 2026.
