Women taking GLP-1 drugs 30 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, researchers say 02.06.2026

Women taking popular GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy demonstrated a 30 percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer compared to those not on the medication, according to a study from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. This finding builds on previous research linking GLP-1 use to improved outcomes in various cancer types. The study, which followed over 110,000 overweight American women aged 45-80 from 2022-2025, suggests that reduced weight and inflammation, key effects of GLP-1 drugs, may contribute to this lower incidence. Researchers are eager to further investigate these medications as potential cancer prevention tools, with plans for a clinical trial to assess their impact on women at higher risk or with a history of breast cancer.
