“World sport must exist. It must be with Russia!” How Russia reacted to the restoration of the Olympic Committee within the IOC 07.07.2026

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to temporarily restore the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) nearly three years after its suspension. This step became possible after Russia declined to establish Olympic organizations in the territories of the DPR, LPR, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyarev stated that the IOC decision lifts all restrictions, including the ban on hosting international competitions in Russia and neutrality checks for athletes. Despite the positive reaction, experts, including Svetlana Zhurova, warn of difficulties: athletes may need to start from scratch due to the loss of quotas. The next key stage will be the reaction of international federations, which must allow Russian athletes to participate in competitions. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called the decision a victory for common sense, emphasizing the importance of returning Russian sports to the world stage.
