The world's largest digital camera has commenced a ten-year celestial mapping project from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. This car-sized, 3,000-kilogram camera, situated on Cerro Pachón, is set to photograph the southern night sky nightly, aiming to create a comprehensive survey of the universe. Scientists anticipate this endeavor will enable the discovery of millions of asteroids, aid in the search for the elusive Planet Nine, map the Milky Way, and facilitate studies of cosmic phenomena like supernovae, black holes, dark matter, and dark energy. The project, named after dark matter researcher Vera Rubin, represents a significant international scientific collaboration.
