Yorgen Fenech files constitutional case alleging eavesdropping by secret service 25.06.2026

Yorgen Fenech, the businessman accused of orchestrating the 2017 murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has initiated a constitutional case against the Maltese state over alleged eavesdropping. Filed on Thursday, the claim asserts that the Secret Service obtained two warrants in 2019, one of which authorized the installation of an eavesdropping device in a meeting room at the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) where inmates meet their lawyers. Fenech also alleges that two mobile phone numbers—one used to communicate with his legal team—were intercepted. His lawyer, Charles Mercieca, is said to have “coincidentally” discovered the first warrant regarding the listening device, which allegedly remained operational throughout Fenech’s entire detention before he was granted bail in 2025.
