Yorgen Fenech murder trial: Defence seeks to widen scope of murder plot by shifting spotlight onto Keith Schembri 07.07.2026

During the sixth day of Yorgen Fenech's murder trial, the defence attempted to expand the investigation's scope by focusing on former chief of staff Keith Schembri. Defense lawyer Giannella De Marco cross-examined Assistant Police Commissioner Keith Arnaud regarding Schembri's alleged links to Melvin Theuma and the disappearance of Schembri's mobile phone and laptop. Arnaud testified that Schembri was not considered a suspect until November 2019 and explained that early database searches were part of a broad inquiry. The defence highlighted that Schembri's phone remained active until the morning of a police search at his home, yet the device was never recovered. Additionally, the court addressed a "doctor's letter" allegedly delivered to Fenech via Adrian Vella at Schembri's request. The session also covered Theuma's presidential pardon and allegations regarding potential payments to former police commissioner Lawrence Cutajar, which investigators found no evidence to support.
