Youth unemployment remains biggest threat to SA's future, says Ramaphosa 03.06.2026

President Cyril Ramaphosa identified youth unemployment as the most significant threat to South Africa's future during his Presidency's Budget Vote in the National Assembly on Tuesday. He announced a substantial government investment of R1 trillion over the next three years, aimed at stimulating economic growth and creating jobs through infrastructure projects like roads, dams, schools, and hospitals. Despite these measures, MPs criticized the government for not adequately addressing the soaring unemployment rate, which reached 32.7% in the first quarter of 2026, with youth unemployment at 45.8%. Ramaphosa acknowledged these concerns, highlighting the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which has created opportunities for over 2.5 million individuals, and other initiatives like the Basic Education Employment Initiative and the National Pathway Management Network. He emphasized that while public employment programs are vital, the ultimate goal is a robust economy generating sustainable jobs.
