Über 2500 Erdbeben erschüttern Teneriffa: Serie an Urlaubsinsel wirft Rätsel auf 20.02.2026

Since Wednesday evening, February 18th, over 2,500 hybrid earthquakes have shaken the underground of Tenerife, primarily beneath the Teide volcano, according to the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN). These tremors, occurring at depths of seven to eight kilometers and registering below 0.7 on the Richter scale, are imperceptible to humans and are attributed by experts to the movement of magma and volcanic fluids. This marks the eighth seismic swarm in the region since October 2016, with two such series occurring within the past week, raising concerns among volcanologists about potential magma accumulation. Despite the significant seismic activity, monitoring authorities, including the IGN and Involcan, state there is no acute danger of an eruption, as such swarms do not increase the short-term probability of an event.
