Zentrales Vorhaben von Tusks Regierung: Polens rechtskonservativer Präsident stoppt Reform für unabhängige Justiz 20.02.2026

Poland's right-wing conservative President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed a law intended by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European government to restore the independence of the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS). Nawrocki cited constitutional concerns, arguing the law would divide the judiciary and place it under political influence. The KRS, responsible for nominating judges, was reformed in 2018 by the previous PiS government, leading to parliamentary appointment of most members, a move criticized by the EU and the European Court of Justice for undermining judicial independence. Tusk had pledged to reverse these reforms, but with Nawrocki's veto, supported by the PiS, this key promise faces significant obstacles, as Tusk's coalition lacks the parliamentary majority to override the veto.
