Zero Tolerance Policy and Reality 07.06.2026

The spread of drugs in Bangladesh has become a terrible national crisis, with approximately 8.3 million people, or 4.89 percent of the total population, addicted to drugs. Of these, 80 percent are adolescents and young adults, putting the country's future at risk. Unhindered drug entry through borders, online sales, and political patronage are playing a facilitating role in its spread. Approximately one trillion taka is spent annually in this sector, weakening the country's economy and social structure. China, realizing the horrors of the opium epidemic in the 19th century, became almost drug-free through strict measures, which can serve as a learning example for Bangladesh. In the current situation, it is essential to build a permanent movement against drugs by combating corruption, increasing social awareness, and creating employment and recreational opportunities for the young generation.
