In 2024, the number of foreign-born doctors working in Germany significantly increased, reaching 13 percent of the total medical workforce, a substantial rise from seven percent a decade prior. Overall, 121,000 immigrant doctors, representing nearly a quarter of all physicians, were employed in Germany, with a notable portion having their foreign qualifications recognized as equivalent. This group includes Germans who studied abroad, with many choosing Austria or Hungary, and a significant number of Syrian doctors, with 800 human medicine and 100 dentistry degrees recognized in 2024. Despite an increase in part-time work, doctors in Germany continue to work longer hours than other professionals, averaging 40.3 hours per week in 2024.
